RE-INSTATEMENT OF STRATFORD UPON AVON TO HONEYBOURNE RAILWAY
I wish to inform you that I support the re-instatement of the railway line between Stratford upon Avon and Honeybourne (SWO) so as to effect the return of through railway services to South Warwickshire.
The recent confirmation that Long Marston Airfield will now be included in Stratford on Avon District Council’s (SDC) Core Strategy modifications requires that such development is delivered sustainably as well as to the benefit of existing residents, it is essential that the Local Planning Authority (SDC) and Warwickshire County Council (WCC) plan and deliver the required infrastructure to support growth which is in the region of 5,900 homes and an increased population of around 13,000.
To positively plan to accommodate this new growth target, SDC and WCC must place the utmost importance on establishing the rail link between Stratford upon Avon and Honeybourne (Long Marston). As well as enabling truly sustainable development to take place at Long Marston Airfield, the re-establishment of this rail link would also deliver a plethora of significant benefits to the wider existing community of South Warwickshire.
These benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:
Sustainable connectivity between a growth area and employment
- Direct northern connectivity to Stratford upon Avon, Birmingham, HS2 & West Midlands
- Direct southern connectivity to Oxford, Reading, London and Worcester & South West
- Existing communities would also be able to access much greater connectivity by rail
Significant mitigation of increased vehicular traffic volumes
- Vehicular traffic flows, particularly tidal (peak hours), arising from some 5,900 homes would be
significantly reduced in Stratford upon Avon and parishes to its south and south west
Tourism & congestion within Stratford upon Avon
- A faster and direct route to/from London (Paddington) that would connect similar tourist destinations of
Oxford and Windsor.
- Enabler to significantly increase visitors to Stratford upon Avon by rail and not road
I request that you consider the above and trust you will support SWO so as to ensure maximum connectivity for Stratford upon Avon and South Warwickshire whilst at the same time mitigating the effects of significant residential growth. SWO will also provide a much needed boost to tourism which is a central and critical part of the local ecomony.
Thank you for your attention and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely

RE-INSTATEMENT OF STRATFORD UPON AVON TO HONEYBOURNE RAILWAY
I wish to inform you that I support the re-instatement of the railway line between Stratford upon Avon and Honeybourne (SWO) so as to effect the return of through railway services to South Warwickshire.
As you know large scale development at Long Marston was initially and vigorously opposed by local communities and this was when it involved significant infrastructure improvements. To date, and several years later with no Core Strategy in place, some development has taken place in the Long Marston area but without major improvements to local infrastructure.
I hope you would agree that there is a need to ensure a sustainable and positive amenity of life for the residents of Stratford upon Avon and the surrounding area. Where local authorities have their ducks in line i.e. Core Strategy in place and Area Action Plans (AAP’s) ready to go - then the area draws the maximum amount of value out of new development to the greater benefit of the wider community.
It was recently confirmed that Long Marston Airfield will now be included in Stratford on Avon District Council’s (SDC) Core Strategy modifications. Consequently, there is a need that such a scale of development is delivered sustainably as well as to the benefit of existing residents. It is essential that the Local Planning Authority (SDC) and Warwickshire County Council (WCC) plan and deliver the required infrastructure to support this growth.
To positively plan to accommodate this new growth target, SDC and WCC must place the utmost importance on establishing the rail link between Stratford upon Avon and Honeybourne (Long Marston). As well as enabling truly sustainable development to take place at Long Marston Airfield, the re-establishment of this rail link would also deliver a plethora of significant benefits to the wider existing community.

- Enabler to significantly increase visitors to Stratford upon Avon by rail and not road
SDC and WCC should be planning for sustainable growth, and this means encouraging alternative modes of transport to the car, including rail. Re-establishing the route at Long Marston would provide direct links between new residential development and employment centres.
SDC’s modified Core Strategy now provides a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to seek part funding from developers to compliment funding from SDC, WCC and the Local Enterprise Partnership to significantly improve our transport infrastructure using sustainable means by re-opening Stratford-Honeybourne.
